what to do if your pet is sick

The best way to find out exactly whether your cat or dog is experiencing a pet emergency is to call a pet health professional. Always alert the veterinarian of any changes to a pets medical conditions that have been ongoing. Any unexplained changes in the normal activity level, temperament, or mobility of a pet call your vet.   

Report any deteriorating symptoms or new symptoms to your vet right away, because they may be an indication that your pets disease has gotten worse. Once your pet is treated, make sure you complete all prescribed medications, and immediately report any new or worsening symptoms to your pets veterinarian. Once you take your sick pet to the vet, you may need to continue your pets health care at home, either through medications, special foods, or supportive physical care.    

If everyone living at home is sick at once, or if you are living alone, make arrangements with an interim caretaker to take care of your pet. If healthy people are still living in the home, they may be able to assume the day-to-day responsibilities of caring for your pets, so that your animals remain in a comforting, known environment. It is important to keep your sick cat separated from other pets in your home, so that you know who is eating what.   

If your veterinarian has prescribed special food for your sick pet, be sure to feed it to them separately from your other pets. For cats, confined her/him in a big dog carrier or a small room, be sure to provide a litter box, food, and water to the cat. Avoid close contact with your pets when you are ill, and avoid handling her/his food and water bowls, toys, etc.   

If your pet is limping, but otherwise fine, limit their activity: walk dogs outside on leashes to use the restroom only. As you can see, there are a lot of possible ways that our dogs, just like us, could be unhealthy. When our pets do get sick, we want to do what we can to ensure that they are suffering as little as possible.    

Whether your dog is ill, or your iguana is, the FDA wants to be sure it is not caused by their food. While there are a number of potential causes, one possibility that you can talk with your vet is if this illness may have been linked to the pet food your family loves. Even if your ailing pet no longer looks or acts ill, the potential remains for a potential illness that may return unless you take up all your veterinarians recommendations.   

Bloody Urine In sick pets, or those who are not peeing, call the emergency room. If your pet is bloated, extremely listless, puppy or kitten, small dogs 5 pounds and less, very skinny, has vomit and diarrhea together, or if you know that it has eaten a toxins or toys/foreign objects, call the emergency hospital. If that does not resolve the illness issue, then you should call your veterinarian, or, outside of hours, the nearest Pet Emergency Clinic from Vets Now, or the Vets Now 24-hour Hospital.
